Aircraft broadcast their own position on 1090 MHz, and a receiver on the ground picks it up. Nothing is simulated or delayed — this is the sky over Europe right now.
You get its tail number, type, altitude, speed and a photo where one exists. The tail number is the aircraft itself — the callsign changes with every flight.
Press Log and it joins your collection — kept by tail number, so the same aeroplane stays one entry however many flight numbers it wears. Free, and yours to keep.
Filter to airborne or ground traffic, press S for satellite imagery, and use fullscreen when you are watching properly. Low and slow with an odd tail number is usually the interesting one.
